How to paint a black dog

How to paint a black dog. Don't use black.
Have fun with the colors in the highlights.
I could have pushed the colors more in this but didn't want to get too crazy since this was a commission.
I will do this as a project for my watercolor students since it can be so much fun.

This little dog is beautiful, and I think it would have been a shame to paint it plain black. The glossy reflections of its coat are rendered successfully with the blues and rusts and pinks. My monitor seems to exaggerate the blues, and I know this because I saw your painting at your studio, but even with intense blue, it works!
